Skin Fitness Inside & Out

With Christmas fast approaching we all want our skin looking great for those family pictures and getting onto a Skin Fitness program is the best way to do it.
Something that quite often isn’t understood by people is the importance of, not just treatments we use to make your skin glow but also what your skin is being fed internally!
Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it is what is on display to the world.
Our highly qualified and experienced therapists have seen every skin type imaginable.
Tranquility also has two nurses who are also highly qualified therapists who due to their medical training know only too well the importance of sun protection as well as a healthy diet and exercise.
A good analogy of what we are saying is that of a very nice car! If the car has been exposed to the elements without the protection of paint and rust protection it will rust as it has no way of repairing itself!
We as humans however, do have numerous ways of protecting ourselves from “rusting” some of which can occur without us lifting a finger.
Let me explain.
Personal fitness trainers are well aware of the two different types of recovery athletes have at their disposal in order for their bodies to recover from a heavy workout. They are PASSIVE & ACTIVE.
Passive recovery is basically relying on your own bodies biological systems to do their job whilst you sleep or rest.
Active recovery however, is where you give your system a kick along by things like massage, stretching and eating foods high in protein, vitamins and anti-oxidants in order to speed up and encourage blood flow and give your body everything it needs to do its job and recover quicker and more efficiently.
Well our skin repairs just as athletes muscles do.
– So doing some light physical training in order to temporarily increase your blood pressure will create more reach for your capillaries to get that nourishing blood supply to the skin.
– Eating foods high in anti-oxidants and protein gives your blood the essential “rust” killers your body needs to repair the damage done to the skin by everyday living.
– And finally, enlisting our skilled therapists to analyse and treat your skin will not only increase blood supply to the extremities of your skin but depending on the treatment, it will feel great, add highly beneficial nutrients to your skin and be akin to a nice car having a professional work hard in order to get it ready for a big show.

Cosmetic Injectables – What Wrinkle?

Anti-wrinkle Injections. Cosmetic Injectables. These are just two of the names for such a popular treatment that still seems to have some stigma attached to it.  Up until 3 months ago, all I knew was that these treatments would stop my pesky little frown line from becoming much more prominent. But since our AH-MAZING Registered Nurse Natasha (did I mention she’s amazing?)  joined our crew, I have learnt so much more about this product! I’ve always been open to giving B***x a try just out of curiosity. Aaaaand now I’m hooked 😍😍😍

I’ve just recently turned 34, have two young boys (anyone with boys will know the daily struggle of just trying to keep these fearless dare-devils alive), own and manage a salon with 7 staff members plus work around my shift-working and hard working hubby. So to say life is a little stressful these days would be an understatement. Getting older is obviously just a fact of life and I firmly believe we all have our own choice in how we age. My choice is to keep as much youthfulness in my face for as long as possible without looking abnormal😆😜 Sure, some can call it vein while others will agree with me but in the end it’s really no-ones place to judge either way.

Does it hurt? To be honest, not really. There is a slight sting in certain areas but the needle is so small and fine that you barely feel it – by the time you do feel it the liquid is already injected and the needle is being removed!

Does it take long? The actual injecting part of the entire treatment is super quick. The longest part of the whole appointment is: filling out the consult medical form and chatting with Natasha, getting your before photos taken, your consultation with our prescribing Doctor and then being drawn up.

Can you put numbing cream on if you’re worried? Yes of course! We’ve had a couple of clients go and grab some Emla cream from the chemist and pop that on before their appointment as some people are afraid of needles so it just made it all that more bearable for them.

What will it actually do? So the way in which Cosmetic-injectables / Anti-wrinke treatment works is that is paralyses the muscle to stop it contracting. This is turn means the skin lays flat as it is not being repeatedly moved by the muscle so then your skin will soften and those lines and wrinkles will either look alot less visible or disappear completely.

How do I know how much I need or where I need to be treated? As I mentioned before, Natasha is amazing. She will assess your facial muscles and their strength and with what you are wanting to achieve with your treatment, she will come up with the right plan to make sure your goal is achieved. The full effect of your anti-wrinkle treatment can take up to 2 weeks however you should see it start top kick in within a couple of days. I personally was impressed after my first treatment as by day 4 I had no frown movement at all – WINNING🙌 But everyone is different so some may take a little longer, others less but this is why it’s important to come back for a 2 week review so that if a small top up is needed then this can be done and to make sure you are happy with the treatment. It is better to have a slight under dose of anti-wrinkle product injected than an over dose of product as that can make things look all sorts of ….. strange…..

What next? Well, Natasha is now offering Cheek filler treatment. One of our Therapists Lisa has had this done and is over the moon with them, so I’m keen to give this a go in the coming months. From what Lisa said, she barely felt a thing! And the fact that it lasts around 2 years is pretty damn appealing that’s for sure😆

My Skin Journey……

I’ve been a Beauty Therapist since 2005.  When I first met my now husband back in 2008, my skin was all sorts of a mess due to living a fairly un-healthy lifestyle – like alot of us do in our early 20’s with too much booze, late nights partying followed by greasy junk food and too much caffeine. I knew exactly why my skin was the way it was since I’d been in the industry for a few years by this point and the nasty break outs were all around my jawline/ lower cheek area which is a classic sign of being an internal factor causing the issue (all that partying lifestyle).  But at the same time I wasn’t in a rush to change the fun I was having so I figured my skin could just suffer that bit longer. (I was doing everything externally right to take care of it though)

However, my darling new boyfriend (now husband) swooped in like the true warrior he is and wanted to save the day my skin since he had suffered from a few breakouts back in the Ye Olde days of his teenage years. He swore black and blue that Benzoyl Peroxide Cream completely cleared up his spots with no adverse reactions – zilch – zip – nada! For that reason he repeatedly hounded me try this ‘miracle’ cream.  My response back to him each and every time was “Are you insane?!” Benzoyl Peroxide 5% is pretty much every Beauty Therapists nemesis since it is so nasty for the skin for soooo many reasons. Yep you can buy it at any chemist and was a main ingredient in a skin care line that was all over TV for quite a few years but that doesn’t mean it is actually any good for the skin whatsoever! It quite literally sucks every ounce of water and oil from the skin, breaking down the acid mantle which is our outer protective layer of the skin which stops bacteria and other nasties penetrating through to the deeper layers of our epidermis.

I explained this to the old fella on many occasions since I had even seen first hand the destruction of Benzoyl Peroxide but he was like a dog with a bone – he didn’t let up. So after months of hearing ‘You should use it, it works great’ I realised the only way to shut up Mr Wisdom was to show him first hand. I warned him before hand what would happen but I don’t think he believed me hahahaha….

So off to the chemist we go.  I pick up this horrible box and take it to the counter to pay…ick ick ick! That night I Rub The Lotion On The Skin before bed.  By the following evening my skin was already feeling drier than normal but still bearable. Apply again. The next night it was drier than the night before but hmmm ok to continue this ‘experiment’. Apply again. After this third application, I woke in the morning to the driest skin I had ever experienced in my life. Not only was it dry but my neck and even the under eye area (I hadn’t actually applied it to either of these areas but hey whatevs?!) honestly looked like it had aged 50 years – no exaggeration there!!  My skin had dried out that much that it had gone like a deep crepey texture, full of lines and was red and so sore.

That night I (unsurprisingly) threw that nasty cream in the bin, set the bin alight and burnt the house down and applied my much loved hydrating serums, masques, and moisturisers to try and heal my shrivelled up skin😭 That night I woke up with my skin flaking off and itching like crazy – and a few choice curse words towards my partner. It took over a week to stop my skin flaking off and bring back some sort of decent level of hydration. Did the breakouts stop? Nope. Did my opinion on Benzoyl Peroxide 5% change? Hell to the No! Do I bring this story up each time my husband thinks he’s right about something? You bet ya! 😉

The moral of the story? Benzoyl Peroxide is the devil. Trust your Beauty Therapist as they do know something about skin. Women are always right😆
